Timber Treatment On Site

Timber treatment on site

We love wood and we want it to last which is why we provided timber treatment on site since 1996.

South African building regulations require that only treated timber be used in a building. In support of this regulation, we don’t just provide timber treatment on site for our own timber, we also treat timber supplied by our customers.

We have 2 SABS registered treatment plants here at the Somerset Timbers yard. We use a highly specialized industrial process that involves the impregnation of preservatives under pressure into dry timber. This process renders the wood nutrients unpalatable to insects and uninhabitable to fungus.

We treat the timber with varying intensity based on the end-use. This is defined by different hazard levels as per the following SABS classifications:

  • H2 Internal – low hazard. Any timber not directly exposed to rain, sun or the earth such as timber framing, roof trusses, flooring, ceiling.
  • H3 Exterior above ground – moderate hazard. Timber exposed to rain and sun but NOT ground: Decking, fencing, garden furniture, gates.
  • H4 Ground contact – high hazard. Timber planted in the ground or exposed to ground contact such as fencing poles, deck support poles.
