Oiling Exterior Wood Is A Must

There is a belief that it is ok not to treat wood and to let it go grey but according to Ian Burger, this is not the case and oiling exterior wood is a must.

Most wood for exterior applications will be utilised for decking, pergolas, fencing, carports, screens, patio & garden furniture. This means it will be exposed to exterior conditions, like rain, UV rays, humidity, and wind all of which deteriorate untreated wood causing irreversible damage. This means oiling exterior wood is a must.

“There are many people who think that leaving wood to turn grey is a good idea. Wood is a natural, living, and breathable raw material even after it has been machined into planks, so leaving it unprotected is simply mistreating it,” said Ian.

As wood turns grey, it ages which results in cracks, splinters, warping, twisting, and bowing. Proper maintenance and preservation will not only increase longevity but will highlight the grain, flames, and colour tones of the timber.

The Solution

To prevent ageing and highlight the character of the wood, any exterior timber must be treated. Using a deep penetrating oil will nourish the wood, repel water and deflect the sun’s UV rays, and ensure resistance to the formation of mould and fungus.

The best way to maintain a healthy exterior wood structure or furniture piece is to either:

  • Oil it with clear oil, should you want it to turn grey over time
  • Oil it with a pigmented oil (a pigment that matches the colour of the wood), should you want it to maintain its natural colour.

Varnish should not be used as this seals the wood pores and prohibits the free movement of moisture resulting results in the same ageing issues as untreated wood.

Oiling exterior wood is a must and our in-house Galseal Range of Clear (Light Oak) and Pigmented (Mahogany, Ebony & Teak) oils will give your timber the protection it needs. Contact our team to find out more.

Wood is the future construction material of choice, but once installed, we must ensure we give it the second life it deserves by properly looking after it,” said Ian.
