May is a month to mark in the Somerset Timbers’ history, as we bring our partnership with Thermory to life and become a leading supplier of thermally modified timber (TMT) in the Western Cape.
A global leader in the manufacture, supply and innovation of TMT Thermory is a brand synonymous with quality and precision, the same principles on which Somerset Timbers was founded and the reason for this partnership.
What is Thermory TMT?
In its natural state, wood is a biodegradable and dimensionally unstable material. Without modification, these properties create design limitations and can hamper the longevity of timber when used for building purposes.
Thermally modified timber (TMT), also known as heat-treated timber or thermowood, is a type of wood that undergoes a controlled thermal treatment process. The thermal modification process alters the chemical and physical properties of the wood, resulting in improved stability, durability, and resistance to decay, insects, and moisture.
Thermally modified timber is commonly used in various applications, including decking, cladding, siding, flooring, and outdoor furniture. It is valued for its enhanced performance characteristics and sustainability, as the process typically uses renewable energy sources and reduces the need for chemical treatments.
Thermory’s quality is ensured by a special thermal modification process that varies by species and purpose of use. This process takes place in a heating chamber with special sensors, controlled by experienced specialists using computer. The principle is the same: the moisture level of the wood is reduced to 0% over a period of 35-46 hours and then the temperature is raised to the necessary level, followed by the cooling, and misting of the wood. At all times, only temperature and steam are used. Heat triggers physical and chemical reactions in the wood and we control the process by adjusting the moisture.
- Intense thermal modification: the temperature is at least 215 degrees, which makes our wood products ideal for use in outdoor settings.
- Medium thermal modification: the peak temperature is 190 degrees, which is suitable for wood for indoor use.
