The Somerset Yard is now fully stocked on Massarunduba Decking – one of the most durable of the decking woods.
Massaranduba (often spelt Maccaranduba) is also referred to as Bulletwood. Commonly harvested for decking material, it is denser than other tropical species like Balau and Garapa and weighs 1080 kg /m3. This makes it an incredibly strong and dense wood that is ideal for exterior applications.
Massaranduba is medium to dark red/brown and tends to darken with age. Once oiled it produces the darkest colour of all timber decking species, resulting in a luxurious end product.
When it comes to workability, Massaranduba produces good results with both hand and machine tools, and it responds well to steaming. Given its high density, however, it can have a dulling effect on cutters and does pose a challenge when it comes to glueing.
