Composite Products Become A New Solution

Wood has longcomposite products become a new solution.

Wood has long been the material of choice for decking construction but this is changing as composite products become a new solution.

Until the late 1990s, wood was the material of choice for deck construction. Over the last 2 decades, however, there have been major advancements in the design of composite products and they have become a new solution.

Although the majority of decks are still built using pressure-treated timber, the use of composite woods has increased as outdoor living areas have become popular as home features. Composite products offer the look and workability of wood, but are more water-resistant, making them a low-maintenance decking option.

Similar to working with wood, composite wood has the added benefit of being less likely to split, crack, warp, bow and twist. Composite decking is also more stain, scratch, and mold-resistant, and has a longer life than wooden decking. Some composite decking is also engineered to be lighter weight for easier handling.

While composite materials usually cost more than wooden decking, the increase in demand has seen greater product development and prices becoming more competitive. Their long life and low-maintenance requirements also make them more economical in the long run. Although composite decking may resist the effects of weathering better than other materials, these products are not completely immune and will still show signs of wear over time.

Many composites are made partially out of recycled plastics and waste wood, which makes them an environmentally friendly, efficient use of resources.

As composite products become a new solution, we at Somerset Timbers will ensure we have a range of composite products available.
